Male-pattern baldness is also called androgenic alopecia. Male pattern is the most common type of hair loss in men. It is due to a combination of genetics and the male hormone dihydrotestosterone. At the age of 50s about half of the males are affected by pattern hair loss. Male pattern baldness affects the growth cycle. It begins to weaken the hair follicle causing shrinks in hair follicles, producing shorter and finer strands of hair. And eventually, no new hair grows in its place. Hair loss is due to hair shedding or a reduction in hair volume or both. Another condition called chronic telogen effluvium also presents with increased hair shedding and is mostly confused with FPHL.
